Minnie Mouse: The Apple of Mickey's Eye

Minnie Mouse is undoubtedly one of the most beloved and recognizable cartoon characters of all time. She, along with her beau Mickey Mouse, is part of the long line of characters that form the backbone of the Disney Empire. People from all over the world recognize her as the love of Mickey Mouse's life, his girlfriend, his reason for being.

Walt Disney first created mouse characters in the 1920s, following the legal theft of his original hit Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. He had stumbled onto something big with Oswald and he wasn't about to give up after one mistake. He began tinkering with different characters, but it was Mickey that won out as the linchpin of his fledgling empire. One recurring theme that Walt always employed with Oswald was his constant chasing of different love interests. This was the theme of many of his cartoons. It worked with Oswald, so he figured he should stick with the same story for Mickey Mouse cartoons.

Walt created the character Minnie Mouse as a love interest for Mickey Mouse. They debuted together in the animated short film "Plane Crazy" in 1928. At the beginning, she wasn't exactly open to the idea of dating Mickey. He invited her into his airplane for a ride. He tried to kiss her and she declined. Eventually he kissed her, but she grew tired of his boorish behavior and parachuted out of the plane. She was featured in the next two animated shorts with Mickey in The Gallopin Gaucho and Steamboat Willie.

Over the years Minnie's role grew in relation to Mickey and she has appeared in several different contexts. In some episodes she appears to be Mickey's wife. In others it seems as if they're unmarried. Walt Disney himself actually said that they were married in an interview in 1933. However, sometimes the story line has to be changed to appear as though they really weren't. Regardless of whether they appeared to be married or not, she is the only love interest for Mickey Mouse and appears so in almost every Mickey Mouse comic. She even introduced Pluto to Mickey in an episode called "The Picnic." Pluto was actually Minnie's pet dog and eventually became Mickey's pet dog over the years.

Lately, Minnie has appeared in various roles. She appeared in a show called "Totally Minnie" and even had her own line of merchandise called Minnie 'n Me. She has been featured in video games like the "Kingdom Hearts" series as the Queen. She also runs the nightclub in the popular television show "House of Mouse." Mickey is the host and she is the owner/operator. Most recently she has been featured as a character on the children's show "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse." She is always friends with Daisy Duck and Clarabelle the Cow.
