Do you know why your neighborhood bookstore is always full of books by Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe and other classic writers? It seems that every book publisher has their own version of each novel by each of these writers. The answer is “public domain.” These works no longer have a copyright. That’s right. If you owned a publishing company and wanted to publish a book by Mark Twain you could do so today and not have to pay anyone for the rights to do so. That leaves you much more room for profit. Well, if you have e-book software then you do have a publishing company that you can run right on EBay. Who else has made a profit with works in the public domain? Matthew Lesko. He has taken government publications and rewritten them. He then sells millions of copies. And why isn’t the FBI or some similar agency after him. Government publications are also in public domain. They are notoriously dry and boring though, so it may take a bit of rewriting before you can sell them as your own. Recipes are also in the public domain. A procedure, discovery, or system cannot be copyrighted. So you can compile a book of recipes and sell them on EBay. A few people have made a lot of money finding the works of past marketing masters after their copyrights expired and selling them. There is definite money to be made with public domain works. |
