Writing An E-Book

Start writing. Just start putting your thoughts down on paper. Write everything down that you want to cover in your e-book and when you think you have everything, write some more.

Write as quickly as you can. This is not going to be your finished product. In fact, if it helps you to write faster, just tell yourself that you are going to throw what you’ve written away as soon as you are done.

Let anything and everything in. You might want to add:

• Lists
• Questions
• Stories
• Steps
• Quotes

After you are done writing all of your thoughts down on the subject you are going to write about, look them over. Do they suggest an organized structure for your book. If not, put your writing down and come back to it a little later.

Once you have a basic outline written, you can now add to it. The way I did this is write every major point down on index cards and then put them in the order I wanted. This way allowed me to rearrange the book without writing a whole new outline or erasing a lot.

The writing basically comes down to illustrating your list (or stack) of points. If one of your points is that you can sell public domain books, then you must explain what “public domain” means. Then you might illustrate when you or someone else has done this. You might also add examples of works that are public domain.

Another good thing to do is get your reader involved in your book. Tell them places that they can go to find public domain works. Have them make lists. You want active readers.

Your first time through, write quickly, write the way you speak and don’t edit yourself. Now that you have provided yourself with a direction, just start typing. Maybe pretend that you are writing an email to your best friend explaining your ideas. If you must, open up Outlook and write your first draft as an actual email.

When you are done, read through your book. Cut out anything that doesn’t sound like you. Remove anything that is just fluff. Of course, check spelling and grammar. And when you think the book is perfect, let someone else read it for you. You could read your own book 5 times and still miss things.
