You Can Write
Everyone has specialized knowledge that other people would pay money for. And you are one of these people. Take a look at the contents of your hard drive. How much would you pay to have your hard drive back if it went up in smoke in the next minute? I know I change my hard drive out each year just to prevent this from happening. I have e-books, software, and bookmarks on there that I would give anything to have back if I lost them. The contents of your Internet Explorer favorites file can be a good place to start if you are looking for something to write
about. One of the most popular articles I ever wrote was about selling your bookmarks for profit, but let me tell you the story behind the article.
Shortly after I started selling hard products on EBay, I bought a 1976 Honda CB750 motorcycle. At the time it was built, it was one of the fastest motorcycles around. While Harley slept, the Japanese came along and built a killer bike. It was fast, it ran forever, it hardly ever broke down, and it didn’t cost a mint. I fell in love with the bike. I bought it for about $1200 and wanted to put more money into it. I discovered that there was a whole cult built around the bike, almost like the Volkswagon cult, maybe worse. There were warehouses around the United States full of brand new vintage parts that had been produced during the bikes heyday. Everything from chrome parts to rigid chopper frames. There were even engine kits around that would make the bike faster than it already was. And where there weren’t parts, there were forums and websites where you could learn to do anything to the bike. Pretty soon, I had a good collection of bookmarks on the motorcycle. If I had any question or was looking for any part, I could go to the file and find what I needed. “Damn, this is so useful.” I thought, “I could sell it.” So I started compiling an e-book of the bookmarks. eBay doesn’t allow you to sell just a list of websites, so I wrote
personalized descriptions of each site, along with my ratings. I also added personal stories related to finding things for
and working on the bike itself. Then the test came. I put it up for auction. I shortly discovered that people had been looking for information like this for a long time. It didn’t make me rich, but selling the book for only $5 a copy over the period of 2 years, I averaged 8 sales a week. I made $4000 off of this in two years and with the automation techniques I discovered, I hardly had to lift a finger. Thinking back, I could have easily doubled or tripled the price. The point is that the bookmarks were already there. They were something I used every day. Compiling the e-book took less than a day. Produce 10 of these products and you could have a good second income coming in. |
